Low-fat is not part of the vocabulary at the Savory Pie Company.
“I’ve had people ask me if I had any low-fat and I look at them like you’ve got to be kidding me,” owner Dee Smith said at her Tea Lane Catering kitchen in Chilmark this week. “There’s a need for gluten free and we’re just starting with that, but there’s certainly no word like low-fat in our category of pies.”
Christmas Tree Benefit
This year you can get your Christmas tree and spread some much needed holiday help at the same time. Jim’s Package Store in Oak Bluffs is holding what amounts to be a Christmas tree benefit for Linda and Eddie Ben David to help with Linda’s health related expenses.
Trees cost $36, a bargain even before you factor in the good will being given. Additional donations are gladly accepted too.
Juniper
juniperus communis
called jenever by the Dutch
green and young, female seed cone
a fleshy berry used in gin
another life when you mature
piney and resinous
your berries beautiful blue
for seasoning, aromatherapy, medicine
native tribes chewed you to ward off hunger
your seeds become beads
Navajo necklaces for protection
I cut boughs from your strong trunk
like the ancients I bring you inside
Cub Scouts’ Party
The Martha’s Vineyard Cub Scouts will celebrate a 600 Club Achievers’ Party on Saturday, Dec. 17, in honor of each scout having raised more than $600 in popcorn sales to benefit Cape Cod and Islands scouting programs. The party will take place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club in Edgartown. Both organizations are more than 100 years old and espouse the importance of character, patriotism, personal fitness and citizenship.
