The regional high school sailing team hosted its final home regatta of the season Friday, defeating Cape and Islands League opponent Barnstable 5-0 in a best-of-five race format. The sailors practice and compete on Lagoon Pond, a far cry from the green fields at the high school.

Sailing is one of two sports at the high school that is co-ed (the other being golf, in the fall). Each boat is manned by two students: the skipper, who steers the boat, and the crew, who maneuvers the jib. Most regattas feature team racing, which highlights strategy and boat handling over sailing in a straight line: three boats from each school sail the same course and earn points based on when each crosses the finish line. The team with the lowest total number of points wins the race.

By the conclusion of the season on May 19, the squad will have compete against 22 different teams, sailing in dual meets and quad meets across New England. The Cape and Islands League championship takes place this weekend.
