Sunday will be Islanders’ last chance for coffee, cake and kindness at Mocha Mott’s in Vineyard Haven, which is closing its doors in advance of the building’s sale to Island coffee chain Toccopuro.
“I’m really happy that it’s somebody local, who is a part of the community,” said Meredith Aldrich, co-owner of Mocha Mott’s and its Main Street building.
Although the well-loved coffee shop is closing Sunday, the building transaction will not be finalized until early next month, Toccopuro owner Nicole Cho told the Gazette Friday.
Ms. Cho declined to provide further details about her plans for the building, but Ms. Aldrich offered a hint.
“It’s going to be a coffee shop, which I think will make people really happy,” she said.
Toccopuro currently has seasonal coffee shops in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs offering a variety of brewing styles, including siphon (vacuum), hand-poured and cold-brewed.
Ms. Aldrich’s longtime partner, Tim Dobel, is exiting Mocha Mott’s with the building sale, while she will continue running the seasonal Mocha Mott’s cafe in Oak Bluffs from April to October.
“This is how I keep doing what I love and Tim gets the retirement he deserves,” she said.
The two are severing only their business relationship, Ms. Aldrich added.
“We’re going to be friends forever,” she said.
An author, singer-songwriter and enthusiastic traveler, Mr. Dobel was on his way to Mexico Friday afternoon.
“I’ve loved doing Mocha Mott’s. I’m just ready for something else,” he told the Gazette by telephone as he waited for his flight. “Time’s ticking away [and] I want to do some things.”
Both Mr. Dobel and Ms. Aldrich said they have been touched by their customers’ reactions as the closing date approaches.
“This has been so overwhelming, the outpouring of emotion and support from the community,” Ms. Aldrich said.
“People really love Mocha Mott’s,” Mr. Dobel said. “We’ve given our best every day for a long time.”
While the Vineyard Haven coffee shop will close permanently after Sunday, Ms. Aldrich said she plans to be there Monday — though not at the usual opening time of 6 a.m. — to make coffee and talk with people who might not have had a chance to catch up with her in the hectic last days of business.
“It’s a nice way to say goodbye,” Ms. Aldrich said. “It feels wonderful that people have embraced what we do [and] I feel fortunate to have been part of something that has touched so many lives.”
From its seasonal spot on Circuit avenue, Mocha Mott’s will continue to be part of the Vineyard scene.
“We’re going to still have our organic fair trade coffee, our own baked goods and bagels from Cape Cod Bagel,” Ms. Aldrich said.
She also will continue sponsoring the Mocha Mott’s Creamers women’s softball team and supporting Little League, she said.
“Transitions are never really easy, but I feel like it’s going to be really good on the other side,” Ms. Aldrich said. “I hope everybody comes to see me in Oak Bluffs in April.”
