Driver Given Probation For Third World Crash

Theodore Bennett pleaded guilty last month to several charges connected to the crash into the Oak Bluffs gift store.

An Edgartown man accused of driving a truck through an Oak Bluffs storefront while under the influence of alcohol pleaded guilty to several charges in Edgartown District Court last month.

Theodore Bennett, 43, pleaded guilty on Dec. 22 to charges of operating under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The charges were brought after he crashed into Circuit avenue’s Third World Trading Co. on the evening of Nov. 22. Police claimed that he also hit and damaged a home on Circuit avenue beforehand and failed sobriety testing at the scene.

Mr. Bennett was additionally found responsible for improperly operating a motor vehicle. He was granted a continuance without a finding on his fourth charge of leaving the scene of property damage crash.

Judge Liza Williamson gave Mr. Bennett one year and six months probation and he must attend an impaired driving program. He has also temporarily lost his license and must pay an undetermined amount of restitution.

Mr. Bennett's lawyer declined to comment on the case when reached Monday.

The crash caused extensive damage to Third World. Owner Lori Katsounakis reopened the clothing and gift store last month, taking customers in by appointment only.
