The Michigan Library Foundation has named the debut book from a Vineyard author one of Michigan’s 20 Notable Books of 2026.
Susan Wasserman’s book Stepping Off the Boat: Stories from North Manitou Island was lauded by the organization and will be honored at a reception in April.
The book tells the long history of North Manitou Island, from its Native American creation story, to as a residence for homesteaders, a vacation spot for city dwellers, and its current status as a national park.
Ms. Wasserman, a resident of West Tisbury, grew up summering on North Manitou, beginning in 1947.
In a statement by the library foundation, it said “The Michigan Notable Books began as part of the 1991 Michigan Week celebration, designed to pay tribute and draw attention to the many people, places and things that identify Michigan life as unique and vibrant.”
Throughout the year, authors will travel to libraries throughout the state of Michigan to discuss their book and share their experience writing it.
