Slushy

The weather, just like my family members, does not respond to criticism.

The weather, just like my family members, does not respond to criticism. Nevertheless, I’m still complaining. While I love snow, I’m not a big fan of it melting and then refreezing. People, watch your step in the early morning.

I need to correct the labeling of the tree in last week’s column. Even though I did mention Hinoki Cypress, the photo was of an Alberta Spruce. Hopefully, you noticed the sprouting of another spruce on its top.

I’ve taken on a big purging task in my office. Honestly, I live in a George Carlin stand-up routine. How can a person accumulate so much “stuff” in a lifetime. I found a box with school reports I wrote in elementary school, for Pete’s sake. It feels great to unburden myself.

I managed to go through the old seeds left over from last year. Since I actually store them properly, they should perform well this coming year. I do have several packages of unopened pale beans and some of the drying varieties. Aren’t there stories of seeds found in ancient tombs which still sprout?

Since I have brand loyalty I went through and marked some choices in my favorite catalogs — Pine Tree out of Gloucester, Select Seeds and Maine, which offer many old-fashioned annual flower varieties.

I rarely, if ever, purchase hybrid varieties. If they need introductions, I’m of the “if it works, don’t fix it” mentality. Almost all my choices are labeled heirlooms.

I do end up with hybrid onion seeds — I have yet to find them otherwise. I only ordered paste tomatoes this year since I do a great deal of canning. I’ll get a couple of Sungold plants for fresh eating. They produce like crazy so two plants would suffice.

I did save a few seeds from Kellogg’s Breakfast and Mortgage Lifter from last year. I’m fond of both of them. They are large and very flavorful.

I spent time on Tuesday gabbing with old friends in Cronig’s. I’ve said often they need to set up a coffee bar in there. We did our best to solve some of the many world problems. There is a quote from The Madwoman of Chaillot. Remember the play by Jean Giraudoux in which eccentric women try to fell corrupt businessmen who wish to drill for oil under Paris? The quote goes, “Nothing is ever so wrong in this world that a sensible woman can't set it right in the course of an afternoon.”

Going after oil in Venezuela is a subject saved for another day. I would rather comment on the renaming of the Kennedy Center.

John F. Kennedy is the only U.S. president to ever receive the Purple Heart. His renowned actions abroad the PT-109 in WWII are known by all.

Donald J. Trump is guilty of “stolen valor.” His dad helped him avoid Vietnam service with so-called bone spurs.

The Kennedy family (most likely much richer and with more influence) lost their first born in a plane crash during his service in that war. So a Gold Star family with a famous love of the arts have to give the billing to the likes of a wannabe dictator? What a world!
