Big Full Moon

The moon reaches its full moon phase at precisely 5:03 a.m. tomorrow morning. But you won't be able to notice any significant difference either tonight or tomorrow night. It is big and full.

The moon reaches its full moon phase at precisely 5:03 a.m. tomorrow morning. But you won't be able to notice any significant difference either tonight or tomorrow night. It is big and full.

The moon is also close, making it bigger than usual.  The moon reached perigee late in the day on Thursday. when it was only 223,909 miles away. The proximity of both being close, in perigee, and full moon means that we will have extreme tides through the weekend. We will have higher than usual high tides and lower than usual low tides.

The reason is all astronomical and physics. Our tides are created by the gravitational pull of both the sun and the moon. When the moon is full, and also close, the gravitational pull on our ocean is greater. A perigee full moon, or a perigee new moon are what gives us the biggest pull. These tides happen a couple times during the year.

No one wants an ocean storm coming up the coast when the full or new moon are in perigee. Storm seas are made worse by higher than normal tides.

Step outside tonight and enjoy this big full moon rising in the east.

Add this astronomical event to the weekend. The Earth is closer to the sun now than at any other time in the year. The earth is at perhelian. Since the Earth's orbit around the sun is not a perfect circle, but only slightly eliptical, our sun is closest to us this weekend, or 91.4 million miles away. The average distance of the sun is around 93 million.
