Entries came in the form of log cabins, a train scene and the Black Dog building. But the winning structure in the inaugural Sweet Homes of Edgartown Gingerbread House Competition went to the Old Whaling Church, as depicted in sugar, frosting, chocolate, gum, Jolly Ranchers, molasses and other sweet treats.
“I used to paint and I did ceramics,” said creator Deb Daley. “I’m definitely crafty, but I’m not an architect.”
The confectionery competition took place during the Christmas in Edgartown weekend, with eight gingerbread houses displayed at the Mad Martha’s ice cream shop to be voted on by the public. It was hosted by real estate agency Portfolio Properties, and also served as a fundraiser, with over $2,000 raised for the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard.
Ms. Daley chose the Old Whaling Church because of her personal connection to the church and also its connection with the Island.
“I believe in my faith, and I love churches and that’s such a big part of Edgartown. Weddings are there, the Minnesingers are there... community events are there, so I said this is perfect,” she said.
The construction process took two weeks, Ms. Daley said, and she was scared the house might collapse on itself, especially with the heavy chocolate bar roof and steeple. Making the frosting out of sugar and egg whites was a key factor in the structural integrity of the house.
“I learned a lot from doing it,” she said.
Over 600 votes were cast, according to Portfolio Properties realtor and competition organizer Leslie Floyd, who hatched the idea in October and hopes to make the competition an annual event.
“It was really this community spirit and everybody really enjoyed it. It was just such a unique thing,” Ms. Floyd said.
