Mikado Asian Bistro in Vineyard Haven was shut down by the Tisbury board of health Monday after failing a health inspection.
According to the health inspection report, the Main street Asian fusion restaurant was dinged for not meeting state and local cleanliness standards and improperly handling food.
Drew Belsky, health agent for Tisbury, told the Gazette that the board visited Mikado three times between Friday and Monday before concluding that the restaurant was unfit to continue operating.
“We had some significant concerns about sanitary procedures and some food handling practices,” Mr. Belsky said.
The health inspection report claims that restaurant workers left rice and soup out overnight before serving them the next day and were storing out-of-date seafood in the refrigerator. The inspection also found that surfaces and some equipment were not properly cleaned and kitchen plumbing was in disrepair.
Mikado did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
According to Mr. Belsky, David Dragas and Kevin Yu from the restaurant attended the Tisbury board of health’s meeting Tuesday night and presented an action plan to fix the cited issues before reopening. Among the board’s requests are a thorough cleaning of the establishment, proof of food handling certifications for relevant staff, and an operating procedure for end-of-night cleanings.
Mr. Belsky said the board will revisit the restaurant Friday to assess whether it is fit to reopen.
“We are hoping that they take this seriously, which, based on our meeting last night, it seems that they are,” he said. “If they follow through with everything that we’ve requested … then yes, we would feel comfortable with them reopening upon that inspection.”
