County Seeks Candidates for SSA, Airport Boards

The Dukes County Commission is seeking applicants for nearly three dozen different positions on various boards and committees.

The county government has spots open coming up in the new year on seven different boards, including one seat for the Steamship Authority board of governors and three on the airport commission.

The county commission hopes to have several candidates across all the roles, according to Doug Ruskin, a commissioner from West Tisbury.

“My personal wish is we have more than one for every position,” he said in an interview Monday. “Every one of them is important in their own right.”

In addition to the Steamship and airport seats, there are also three seats open on the Dukes County Regional Housing Authority board, two seats on the Dukes County personnel board, one seat on the Dukes County OPEB pooled trust, one associate commissioner for disabled and 24 spots on the Dukes County Health Council.

The deadline for applications is Dec. 28. Prospective candidates can fill out the form on the county website.

Interviews for the positions will take place in January.

Mr. Ruskin hoped some newcomers would step up, giving the county a chance to balance new ideas with institutional knowledge.

“Please volunteer,” said Mr. Ruskin. “The Island needs you....New faces, new ideas, new perspectives.”

Clarification Chilmark

It’s unclear as to whether these seats are vacant and the people currently appointed are no longer interested in serving.

The County website has a precise list of open positions (https://www.dukescounty.org/county-manager/pages/volunteer-appointment-…). I encourage interested volunteers to apply, regardless of the interest of the position incumbent. Speaking only on my own behalf as a Commissioner, while I am very grateful to those who have served in these positions, the desire (or not) of the current appointee to continue to serve, while a relevant consideration, is by no means conclusive. The County's appointment process is found here: https://www.dukescounty.org/sites/g/files/vyhlif4356/f/uploads/dcc_appo….

With a planned renovation of the airport being scheduled I hope a new board can get around to reducing the night sky light pollution that is coming from the airport and the airport business park. More and more super bright LED lights are appearing, mounted to sides of buildings, illuminating the sky and not the buildings they are supposed to protect. It's been going on for years and blocks the glory of the stars and night sky.
