Oak Bluffs Town Column: Week Ending Nov. 14

November is Native American Month around the nation. But it is every month on the Vineyard because we have the blessing of the Wampanoag tribe’s culture, history, businesses and presence every day.

November is Native American Month around the nation. But it is every month on the Vineyard because we have the blessing of the Wampanoag tribe’s culture, history, businesses and presence every day. Known as the “People of the First Light” they have been in Massachusetts and Rhode Island for over 12,000 years. Their presence on the Island, largely in Aquinnah, grounds us all in history and legacy as they remain close to the natural environment sharing their language, their skills at fishing, hunting, singing, dancing and agriculture with us all.

Oak Bluffs shares a unique daily reminder of the presence of the tribe by the names of so many of our streets. Uncas, Tuckernuck, Wamsutta, Narragansett, Nantucket, Waban, Nashawena Park, Naushon, Canonicus, Pequot, Samoset and Massasoit are but a few of the roads and pathways that we traverse on our daily journey in life. These names are an immovable reminder of who truly owns the land.

Veterans Day is not nearly enough of a reminder of how much respect and appreciation that we have for those who serve and protect so that we might remain free. In addition to pausing at a grave site, marching in a parade, placing flags and flowers in cemeteries and near American Legion Posts, please consider a contribution or a visit to volunteer at one of many veteran organizations. Many return from service with injuries that never heal, with combat anxiety, mental health issues and more. They deserve our best.

Bernard Chu ‘s Upland Capital Corporation hosted an amazing early holiday fete last Saturday at his Harbor View Hotel. Family, friends, hotel leadership, business partners, construction and service colleagues all enjoyed a wonderful setting to dine on bay scallops, roasted prime tenderloin and butter poached lobster tail and much more. Bernard and Jean thanked so many who help make the hotel a welcoming environment for all guests and patrons throughout the year.

Paradise on earth is living the Vineyard experience. Enjoy it as life is fleeting!

Rest in Peace, Randall Edward Taylor
