Oak Bluffs Town Column: Week Ending Oct. 31

Frank and Sharon Redd hosted over 100 guests on the weekend of Oct. 17 to 19 to celebrate the marriage of their oldest son Schuyler to Christina Gardika Haggerty. The festivities started at the Redd Estate in Oak Bluffs on Friday night with heavy hors d’oeuvres, dinner under a decorated and heated tent. The catering food and service was exceptional.

Flowers and plants were strategically placed throughout the sprawling back yard. The large fireplace near the deck was roaring with fire wood burning all evening providing cherry and apple wood fragrances that matched the romance in the air.

The wedding at Lambert’s Cove Inn was officiated and conducted by first cousin Ivy Redd Couch who shared words about the couples long-term friendship that blossomed into a committed relationship.

Brothers Christian and Colin spoke eloquently on the bonds between the three. The Redd family was especially warm to the 20-plus members of Christine’s family who came all the way from Greece to join the wedding events.

Other cherished guests included classmates and friends from Virginia State college days with father Frank. Dancing until late in the evening on Saturday followed dinner and the devouring of their multi-layered rich, deep, chocolate cake — the couples favorite. Sunday concluded with a farewell breakfast for out-of-town guests, hosted by aunt Kathy Taylor in East Chop.

The Vineyard Preservation Trust has announced a plan to completely renovate and modernize the grass and grounds surrounding Union Chapel. The goal is to flatten some of the exterior sections, make it more accessible to those needing special assistance, create gardens, an event kiosk, benches and more. Much of this improvement offers naming opportunities for the public. More information can be obtained by reaching out to Nevette Previd, executive director at the Trust.

News has reached me that Oak Bluffs has lost one of its giants: Gus Anglin. Gus was a Roxbury native who rose through the education ranks to become principal of several large complex high schools in the Boston Public school system. He was one of the original founders of the October Cookout on Inkwell beach, among other activities in the community. Please shower his wife Millie and sons Steven and Scott with love and appreciation.

Prayers are up for Rev. Aliya Browne of Union Chapel who unexpectedly lost her beloved brother last week. Aliya is not only the president of the chapel but a full-time physician on staff at the Vineyard Hospital. She and husband Reggie are valued members of the Island community. Let’s show our love and support.

Based upon the most recent Vineyard Commission meeting, there remains a large vocal group of residents who continue to oppose the plans to develop the former Oceanview Restaurant into a multi-story hotel resembling what was there decades ago. Many trade offs to consider.

Paradise on earth is living the Vineyard experience. Enjoy it as life is fleeting.

Rest in peace, Randall Edward Taylor.
