Northeaster’s Strong Winds Sideline Ferries

The Cape and Islands were bearing the brunt of the wind from the storm that was headed up the east coast, and the Vineyard is under a high wind advisory until 8 p.m. Monday.

A northeaster’s heavy rain doused the Vineyard and strong winds prompted several cancelled ferry crossings Sunday and Monday.

Predicted by the National Weather Service to bring sustained winds between 25 and 35 miles per hour, as well as gusts of up to 55 miles per hour, the storm hit the Vineyard on Sunday and continued to cause travel disruptions into the Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday.

The Cape and Islands were bearing the brunt of the wind from the storm that was headed up the east coast, and the Vineyard is under a high wind advisory until 8 p.m. Monday. A coastal flooding advisory is in effect for the Island until 7 p.m. Monday, and there could be some minor flooding in low lying areas.

Trip cancellations for the Steamship Authority started to trickle in on the Nantucket route Sunday morning and all trips aboard the fast ferry were scuttled. By the afternoon, the ferry line began halting trips on the shorter and more sheltered trip between Woods Hole and the Vineyard.

As of Monday morning, more than 20 trips on the Vineyard route had been cancelled over the two days and more were expected throughout the day.

“On the Woods Hole-Martha’s Vineyard route, service on Monday October 13th will be on a trip-by-trip basis based upon sailing condition,” the Steamship warned passengers.

The winds also knocked power out to parts of the Island. On Monday afternoon, Eversource reported nearly 300 people without power in Vineyard Haven, including parts of Main street, due to downed tree branches.

The National Weather Service expected effects of the storm to linger through Monday evening into Tuesday, with the potential for intermittent showers on the Vineyard.

About 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is predicted for eastern Massachusetts, with most of it falling Sunday into Monday.

Some surfers and kite boarders took advantage of the wind, though the weather service did advise caution in the water and warned of the potential of rip currents along the south shore.
