A storm headed up the east coast is expected to bring strong winds and potential flooding to Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday and Monday.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning starting Sunday afternoon, prompting the Steamship Authority and other ferry services to alert travelers of potential cancellations.

The weather service predicts northeast winds of between 25 and 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 55 miles per hour, making for choppy seas.

“Gusty winds are forecast starting Sunday that have the potential to cause cancellations and service disruptions on both the Hyannis-Nantucket route and the Woods Hole-Martha’s Vineyard route,” the Steamship Authority wrote in an alert.

Fast ferry service to Nantucket had already been scuttled for Sunday, and the ferry line predicted that Oak Bluffs service would be diverted to Vineyard Haven through Tuesday.

“Service on the Vineyard route will be on a trip-by-trip status based upon sailing conditions,” the Steamship Authority wrote.

The high wind warning is in effect through Monday afternoon, and the National Weather Service said the gusts could bring down trees and power lines.

The Cape and Islands is expected to experience the strongest winds from the storm, and the unsettled weather could linger into Tuesday, especially in the eastern half of southern New England.

About 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is predicted for eastern Massachusetts, with most of it falling Sunday into Monday.

As of Sunday morning, air travel was largely uninterrupted at Martha’s Vineyard Airport
