A potluck supper will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Chappy Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring a dish to serve eight and your own refreshments. Plan to stick around to help with clean up. Mark your calendar for the third Wednesday of every month for future potlucks except for the ferry captain’s appreciation supper in December which will be on the second Wednesday.

Household hazardous materials collection is at the transfer station across the highway from the airport on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. See the MV Refuse District website for details.

The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby wraps up Saturday, Oct. 18. According to the fisher folks, the fish are few this year. Nonetheless, Chappaquiddicker Kevin Peters is on the senior grand leader board with an 18-pound boat caught bluefish. Rick Shifter got the triple crown with a fly rod also from a boat. Talk about making it a challenge. Melissa Sliwkowski caught a blue from shore to get her name on the female weekly leader board way back in the second week.

Even though the derby is ending, October Fish, sponsored by Larry’s Tackle Shop continues to the end of the month. You can weigh in your fish at the derby headquarters and then head uptown to Larry’s to win more prizes. Sign up before you catch your fish. See their website for details.

The Chappy ferryboat On Time 2 departs for Vineyard Haven for maintenance and Coast Guard inspection on Sunday, Oct. 19. Before that day, see if you can get your trailer hitch or bike carrier off so that your vehicle takes up less space on the ferry. The difference might make it possible to put a third vehicle on board. We figure that the ferryboat will be gone at least until Thanksgiving.

Tuesday, Oct. 21 is the peak of the Orionids Meteor Shower. The sky will be dark since it’s a new moon that night. Expect to see 20 meteors per hour. They come out of the constellation of Orion which is easy to spot after it rises at 10 p.m. This display is caused by the debris left behind by Haley’s comet.

The community center fall clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Good news about Halloween this year. It’s on a Friday! Stay up all night eating candy without worrying about getting your homework done for two more days. Plus, daylight savings ends that Sunday, Nov. 2, which means that you get an extra hour of sleep. It’s almost as if it was all thoughtfully planned!
