Damaged Fire Hydrant Leads to Road Closure

Flooding from a damaged fire hydrant Thursday afternoon prompted officials to close a portion of Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.

Flooding from a damaged fire hydrant Thursday afternoon prompted officials to close a portion of Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.

The fire hydrant outside of the Tackenash Knoll affordable housing construction site was struck by a construction vehicle around 4:15 p.m., leading to flooding that caused unsafe roadside conditions, said Oak Bluffs Water Commissioner Ray Moreis, who was riding his bike by the scene.

“I was biking down the trails here and saw the water flowing,” he said. “Pretty unusual, you know.”

Mr. Moreis said the road will be closed from the Barnes Road roundabout to the intersection at County Road until the street is cleared and the fire hydrant can be repaired. He did not provide a time estimate.

The mechanism inside the fire hydrant that controls water flow was damaged when the truck hit the hydrant, Mr. Moreis said. Officials were able to stop water flow at 5:10 p.m.

He added that residents of side streets will be able to pass through during the closure.
