Vineyard Haven Town Column: Week Ending Sept. 26
Heartbreaking newsletter! Because of cuts to the arts our Yard in Chilmark must close for this next year. Joan Walsh has a fantastic painting she did of our Island kids being taught to dance by professionals from New York several years ago. I spent many years going to performances at the Yard.
The Tibetan monks who came here to work at Slough Cove Farm assisted with healing on-Island. A special focus was on tick diseases as well as other work.
The night before our fishing derby started a special group of fishers assembled to take a picture in recognition of Janet Messineo Israel.
In their relentless travels Eric and Kathy Poehler are now enjoying Scotland.
My friends report that Tivoli Day was wonderful. More food, many people and, of course, many bands.
This Saturday, Sept. 27, will be a hybrid meeting of our MVNAACP at 1O a.m. at Tisbury Council on Aging at 34 Pine Street.
Rosh Hashanah began the night of Sept. 22, and Yom Kipper is begins the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 1.
I made an error in my heartfelt sadness at Dr. Timothy Guiney’s passing last week. I called him by a different first name. And now we have the passing of Dr. Michael Jacobs another doctor who serviced us well. Condolences.
Elmore Silva died peacefully at home in Vineyard Haven at age 102 last week. Also my friend Bonnie Sue Dietz, a wonderful person and teacher, has left us.
The birthday bandwagon pulled along Sara Alwardt on Sept. 19; Sept. 22 belonged to Howie Marlin; Sept. 23 was a party for Grace Hotchkiss Scarano; and on Sept. 28 Pat Buckley Gardella takes the cake. Many happy returns.
