A Vineyard man was arrested this weekend for allegedly threatening to bring a shotgun to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Stephen Green, 67, was arraigned on Monday in Edgartown District Court and pleaded not guilty to a terroristic threats charge.
According to a statement from the Oak Bluffs police on Monday, Mr. Green threatened a hospital employee over the phone on Sunday morning after calling to inquire about a bill. When the employee informed him that the billing department was closed and advised him to call the following day, Mr. Green told the employee he would be arriving at the hospital with a shotgun, police said.
“Investigating officers formed the opinion that Green had willfully communicated by telephone, a threat that a shotgun would be present at the hospital (a public building) in the near future, with the obvious implication being that this shotgun would be used in its capacity as a deadly weapon against the staff at the hospital, and that this implied threat did thereby cause fear and anxiety to the staff of the hospital,” police wrote.
Police claim Mr. Green made incriminating statements when police called him by phone and again when meeting with officers at a business on State Road in Tisbury, at which point they arrested him.
Mr. Green’s bail is set at $300. He is scheduled to reappear in court for a probable cause hearing on Sept. 22.

I.N.This was deemed a "terroristic threat," and bail is set at only $300? Is that a mis/print? Is anyone else mystified and/or outraged? How many times have we seen the "justice" system fail to treat actual threats to individual and civil safety seriously? This is a terrifying situation, and the low bail makes it more so..
My thoughts exactly; given
Mark Melia Portland OR, nee of EdgartownMy thoughts exactly; given the highly charged atmosphere we live in these days, this would seem to be a "held without bail" or at least a very high bail situation. If this was just a one-off of an angry person who lost their cool and yelled at someone about a healthcare bill that would be one thing. Implying that you are coming to shoot people is a totally different game.

James EdgartownThis appears to be an overreaction by the authorities during a very tense moment in our country’s heighten awareness of potential violence and mass shootings. This may be another example for the need of mental health specialist to be incorporated into policing to assist in making these types of assessments. A mental health professional could provide a better insight and help identify potential threats, mental illness vs. an opportunistic approach to a potential sensational arrest for a drunken outburst. Calling a business, a municipality, a hospital or even the Steamship Authority on a Sunday and requesting to speak to billing and expecting someone to actually be available is a "red flag". My guess it that the individual was intoxicated and received a substantial bill from the hospital and lost it. I am not trying to adjudicate the case in its entirety but if he was an imminent threat to the safety of the employees of the hospital, why meet? Why not go to his home and see if he actually had any guns and what was his true mental state. It sounds like entrapment and hear say. I am of the opinion, that the officers did not have enough to arrest him and met with him to make sure he admitted to “making terrorist threats” without his lawyer present. But, unfortunately, I doubt the island has a nimble, savvy and sharp enough attorney that would dare touch this one. Too many hands already involved and judging by the reaction on the comments posting, “guilty til proven innocent”. Welcome to the “new order”. Maybe they should have investigated more?l and lost it. I am not trying to adjudicate the case in its entirity but if he was an imminet
