Vineyard Haven Town Column: Week Ending Sept. 12

The Town of Tisbury is so fortunate to have Heather Maciel as our animal control officer. She is thoughtful, kind and helpful. Do not hesitate to call her if you have a problem.

Many of my friends report they have gone for their last swim of the summer. Then this great weather continues and they call the next day to say they just went for their last swim again. I hope this weather keeps up. September is my favorite month.

Ah, September. The school buses are back on schedule and the basketball Kid in my neighborhood is back to practicing everyday after he gets off the bus.

Our beloved Capt. Robert Douglas who built and operated the Shenandoah for years will be celebrated at a memorial in his memory at the Black Dog Wharf on Sept. 14. Fair winds and following tides.

The annual Tivoli Day will be celebrated in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, September 20th. Music, food, dancing and shopping. Be there.

Congratulations to our Island resident Henry Louis Gates, Jr. He and his team won a creative arts Emmy for his show Finding Your Roots. What a joy.

Don’t forget me. Now that your summer guests and family have left I hope to have more personal input from you.

Sadly, my dear friend David Whitmon is suffering from the passing of his beloved cat, Blacky. They were inseparable for years.

Get well wishes go to Linda Tydings Massaro and my traveling friend, Chris Hulbert.

The Sept. 7 birthday bandwagon pulled along Chris Hulbert and Carrie Stokes Lau. Many happy returns.
