Soccer Teams Look Strong in Opening Games

Boys soccer opened the season with back-to-back wins, defeating Monomoy 3-1 and Cohasset 1-0 to start on an undefeated note.

Head coach Rodrigo Honorato said the plan against Monomoy was to smother the other team.

“MV brought intensity and we were hungry for our first win,” he wrote after the game. “We played simple two touches and we tried to play forward and not let them breathe.”

He commended freshmen Moses Thomson, who scored the first goal of the regular season, and Anthony Pereirra, who scored in the second half.

Thomson also had a hand in the lone, winning goal against Cohasset.

“Matheus Lacerda capitalized on a rebound from a free kick by Moses Thomson, crashing the net to score the game-winner,” Mr. Honorato said.

The team has two away games this week, and then a pair of home games this weekend, facing Collegiate Charter School of Lowell on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. and Nantucket on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The girls soccer team won its season opener 4-0 against Monomoy, dominating the game with 42 shots on goal, but dropped its second game to a tough Sutton High School, which won the 2024 division 4 state championship title. The Vineyarders put up a good fight, but ultimately lost 3-1.

“Unfortunately, the Vineyard came out of the gate a bit groggy and gave up a penalty kick two minutes into the game,” wrote coach Matt Malowski, after the game.

He lifted up the work of freshmen goalkeeper Lucy Doyle, who made seven saves for the day.

The team has a home field run this weekend, taking on Saint John Pull II on Friday at 3 p.m., Collegiate Charter School of Lowell on Saturday at 12:15 and Nantucket on Sunday at 1 p.m.
