Circuit Stage, the performing-arts division of Circuit Arts, is hosting two play readings this week: Circles by Danny Tejera and The Galas by Justine Gelfman. Both playwrights are based in Brooklyn but have seasonal ties to Vineyard.
Circles will be presented Thursday, August 28, and The Galas is Friday, August 29. Both shows take place at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Circuit Stage is a new wing of Circuit Arts that focuses on providing a space for artists to create and deepen new works and to present in front of an audience.
The opportunity to showcase new works is exciting, according to Circles director Caitlin O’Connell.
“These opportunities are so great because we learn so much,” Ms. O’Connell said. “Sharing early and often with the audience, [getting] their reactions, you start to feel the play actually really exist with the audience there, and you can hear it and feel it and understand what needs to happen next in a new way.”
Earlier in the week, Mr. Tejera was still adding some new finishing touches to his play, which focuses on four people who are living together and grappling with definitions of time and relationships. Mr. Tejera said he is heavily inspired by writers Anton Chekov and Caryl Churchill, and that his writing process starts with the characters.
“I try to come up with the people, and then I’m like, what might happen to these people versus people who start with the story,” Mr. Tejera said.
The Galas is a comedy that explores philanthropy and medicinal aid through a thousand years, from the plague until death and beyond. Ms. Gelfman said the idea stemmed from a prompt in graduate school, where she — along with Mr. Tejera — was mentored by renowned playwright Annie Baker.
“I’m so fascinated by these ideas of utopias that are doing a lot of good, and also sometimes are perpetuating the power structures that they’re claiming to try to fix,” Ms. Gelfman said.
The Galas is directed by Joan Sergay, who said she thrives on collaboration.
“New work development is my favorite thing to do, and being able to work with a writer is such a joy and privilege, especially being able to be on a project so early, and to be able to be a part of the generation of a new play,” she said.
Ms. O'Connell said she is excited for Vineyard audiences to experience the work of actors Elizabeth O’Donnell, Cindy Cheung, Andrew Garman, Janice Amaya and Daniel Liu.
“I think some people will recognize these people from movies and television,” Ms. O'Connell said. “They’re talented and they’re amazing and spectacular to watch. It’s a privilege to have them here.”
Both Ms. Gelfman and Mr. Tejera said they are thankful for the opportunity offered by Circuit Stage and urged other artists to also ask for help when needed.
“Be kind but also be brave and bold in asking for time and space,” Ms. Gelfman said. “We have all been young once, and people are really down and generous to give.”
