Six houses in the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Ground will be open to the public on August 13 as part of the annual Cottage tour.
The cottages this year are all located on Siloam avenue. The tours begin at 10 a.m. and the last ticket will be sold at 2 p.m. Docents will be on hand to provide specific details and approximately two hours is recommended to be set aside to see all the cottages, but everyone can go at their own pace.
Christine Decker Marquis, a Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association tour committee member, said the little details of the homes highlight the people who live there and the history of the Camp Ground.
“It is anything from the architecture or the artwork, any details about how they filled out the living spaces, or about the owners themselves,” she said.
Ms. Decker Marquis said that one of the homes featured this yeyar is filled with Jaws memorabilia, as the family who lives there were extras in the movie when it was filmed on the Island in 1974.
Touring the homes gives people a chance to see the inside of historic buildings from the late 1800s, she added, and how people have adapted the cottages over the years.
“They are a piece of history,” she said. “This whole spot is a historic landmark, and while there are a lot of ways to do self-guided tours or take take tours, this is the one time of year where you get insight on what it is like to live inside of these homes,” she said.
Tickets can be purchased for $35 in advance at mvcma.org or in-person at the Tabernacle for $40.
