Chamber Music Society Is More Than Concerts

The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society summer season is in full swing, hosting world-renowned musicians and premiering new musical pieces through the end of August.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society summer season is in full swing, hosting world-renowned musicians and premiering new musical pieces through the end of August.

The season commenced in July with A Far Cry, a chamber orchestra from the Boston-area, and a wind quintet composed of Boston-based musicians in collaboration with the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra.

Three performances of the season remain, including one by Chicago-based string trio, Black Oak Ensemble, on Saturday, August 9 and the Chappaquiddick Community Center, and Sunday, August 10 at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury. The trio will premiere a Mozart piece that was recently discovered, as well as a piece written specifically for them.

“There will be old pieces just discovered after 250 years and brand-new pieces just written in the last year,” said Kim Baumhofer, Chamber Music Society board president.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society was founded in 1984 and works year-round to bring chamber music groups to the Island, provide educational programs in the public schools and host residencies for artists.

“About half of our programming is summertime and the summer season, and then the other half is our year-round programming that is really targeted at students and the local community,” Ms. Baumhofer said.

Ms. Baumhofer said she is excited about lifting up a new era of chamber music.

“Chamber music is changing in the country,” she said. “It’s a living and breathing thing, even though we think a lot of chamber music as being old, dead composers, so I would really encourage people to give it a try.”

This season also welcomes the Boston Lyric Opera on Sunday, August 17 at the Old Whaling Church, and Amit Peled and Martin Labazevitch on Wednesday, August 27 at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

At its core, the Chamber Music Society’s mission is to give back to the local community, Ms. Baumhofer said.

“As a small organization and a small budget, we really do provide a lot for the community, and we’re really starting to feel like we’re seeing some impact on that,” Ms. Baumhofer said.

Inspiring the next generation is also a major goal of the organization.

“We’ve had students start playing string instruments again, young students corner a cellist and say I play the cello too and been very excited about talking to them about that, and students coming to Featherstone with their free tickets to concerts,” she said.
