If it seems that I write about many artists, writers and musicians in this column it’s because that is who we are surrounded by on Martha’s Vineyard. Our famous cartoonist, Paul Karasik, has just been awarded an Inkpot trophy at a ComCon festival in California.

My friends report that the Soul Dance party at the P.A. Club last Thursday night was fabulous. Lots of dancing.

Music Man Stephen Hart will do a solo opening performance with Entrain on Monday August 4 at Featherstone. He will also play at the M.V. Family Campgrounds at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday August 10.  One of his many other talents is to prepare beautiful sushi platters for your parties.

Artist Colin Ruel has his studio open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Thursday, August 14 he will have a show of portraits from 5 to 7 p.m. Colin is an amazing painter.

Artist-in-residence at Mariposa Museum this summer is Harry N. Seymour. He hosted an opening reception for artist Danroy Henry. Danroy and Harry’s work will be on display at Mariposa through the end of September.

Many of my friends report the Rod Stewart concert off-Island last Saturday night was wonderful. Who would doubt that?

I urge you to read the tribute James Taylor wrote about Tony Bennett in July 2023. It captured my dear Tony so well.

One of the best book sales on Island will run from Thursday, July 31 through Sunday, August 3. The friends of the West Tisbury Library always have a very well organized and beautiful presentation. The sale will be held under a tent in the parking g area of the West Tisbury School. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Monday, August 4th any unsold books are free.

Sadly for me and many others, our seasonal visitor, Chris Hulbert and his faithful companion, Chiclet, will be leaving the Island on August 2 to travel to places West and South. The Center for Living will miss Chiclet’s joyful visits. Same time, next year.

Sandy Healey’s celebration of life services were wonderful last Saturday. She is so missed.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Joan Lelacheur on July 26, and Megan Honey Baptiste observed July 27. I am pleased and honored to share my August 3 birthday with Tom Brady and Tony Bennett. Barack Obama claims August 4. And on August 5 Elaine Klein takes the cake. Many happy returns.
