Book Festival Takes Readers Beyond the Page

The Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival returns to the Island on August 1 for three days of author conversations and readings, in-depth panels and an opening night discussion with editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, and staff writer, Ashley Parker.

More than 30 authors will take part in the festival and there will be seven panels covering a range of issues.

“It’s a wealth of choices, but it’s also meant to be very current, to give people the opportunity to explore the time that we’re in,” said festival founder Suellen Lazarus.

Friday’s evening’s sold-out panel is titled Signal vs Noise: Covering This Presidency. Mr. Goldberg was behind “Signalgate,” where he was accidentally added into government group chats that included classified information about military operations in Yemen.

“We wanted to provide a venue for people to listen to thought leaders on some of the compelling issues of the day that we’re all thinking about and struggling with,” Ms. Lazarus said.

According to Ms. Lazarus, the panel themes came together naturally, based on what authors wrote about in their respective books.

“We’re talking about the power of the presidency,” she said. “We’re talking about the super rich, and we’re talking also about things like the forces that are happening in the world by climate change, and what power are the people?”

The day ends with a panel titled The Press Under Pressure: Media’s Role in a Shifting Democracy.

“What we hope is that the program will build on itself over the course of the day,” Ms. Lazarus said.

Creating a space of intellectually stimulating conversations has always been a hallmark of the festival.

“We have encouraged all these moderators to focus on the pressing issues of the day, and we selected them because of that,” Ms. Lazarus said. “We wanted to provide a forum to have a deep dive with experts into things that people are thinking about all in one place. This is three days of conversations with 30 of the country’s leading authors, and there’s not many places where you can do that with this level of depth.”

On Sunday, each author will have the opportunity to speak in-depth about their books, all of which will be available for purchase.

Gathering everyone on the Island to meet each other is something that Ms. Lazarus and her team prides themselves on being able to offer.

“Many of them don’t know each other, and they don’t know the Vineyard, so our priority is giving them a little showcase and exposure to the Vineyard and why it’s so special,” she said.

The Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival takes place at the Chilmark Community Center on August 1 to 3. For a full schedule of author talks and more information, visit mvbookfestival.org.
