Cozy Corner Cafe Makes Plans for Nighttime Lounge

Cozy Corner Cafe is proposing to stay open until 12:30 a.m. and wants the ability to serve drinks and play music.

An Edgartown cafe is looking to extend its hours into the evening so it can serve alcohol and light bites.

Cozy Corner Cafe, a coffee shop that serves breakfast and lunch in Post Office Square at the Triangle, received preliminary approval from the Edgartown planning board Tuesday on the new idea. The cafe is proposing to stay open until 12:30 a.m. and wants to have the ability to serve beer, wine and liquor after 5 p.m., and play music after 7 p.m.

“I believe that this addition to Cozy Corner is going to come naturally because we already have a lot of requests to stay open later and we already have a lot of requests for private parties,” owner Iggy Vukoje said.

The coffee shop normally closes at 5 p.m., and the 7 p.m. start time for music was chosen because all other businesses in the square are closed by that time, Mr. Vukoje said.

Overall the board was in support, and voted unanimously in favor of the application to amend the cafe’s past special permit.

“I think you’ve already established a really nice gathering spot for people, so it seems logical to extend it into the evening,” said planning board member Julia Livingston.

Mr. Vukoje’s change to his previous special permit will now require further signoffs from the board of health, wastewater officials, the select board and the state liquor authorities.

Mr. Vukoje plans to run a lounge-style operation, he said, with finger food and tapas. The cafe doesn’t have a hood system in the kitchen, meaning it is restricted on the types of foods it can cook.

“I just think it’s going to be good for the entire Island to have another place where they can attend another event, to watch sports,” Mr. Vukoje said.

Music would only be played inside, and Mr. Vukoje said the tunes couldn’t be heard from the parking lot.

Some neighboring businesses and Mr. Vukoje’s landlord wrote letters in support of the proposal.

“I am confident that Iggy will continue to operate his business with the same level of excellence and dedication that has made Cozy Corner Cafe a beloved destination in Edgartown,” wrote Emily Serio, the owner of Relaxation Spa in the Triangle.

The board pondered a condition that would have required patrons to buy food with alcohol, but later decided to only require the cafe to have substantial appetizer offerings.

“Thank you for giving some more options,” said planning board member Taylor Pierce. “We appreciate it.”
