The Massachusetts Lottery is hosting a Jaws-themed game show on the Vineyard this weekend where one lucky winner will walk away with $1 million. 

The event will be held at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven on Sunday and is taking place as the Island celebrates the 50th anniversary of the blockbuster’s release.  Thirty contestants were selected through Mass Lottery’s Jaws instant scratch ticket game, which was launched in March 2024. Along with the show, the contestants already won a three-day trip to the Vineyard with an itinerary filled with Jaws-themed tours and events. 

Each contestant can bring one guest, which will make up the audience for the event.  

Contestants will participate in a tile game, according to Rachel Guerra, deputy director of communications at Mass Lottery. Thirty tiles will be lined up and the contestants will pick them to reveal their prize, including amounts of $500 to $5,000. Two of the contestants will select tiles which tell them they are moving on to the second round, where one of them will take home the grand prize of $1 million. The other contestant will win $10,000.

“The final round, it’s going to be the same board, changed a little bit, and the two contestants are going to be trading off to see who can get the 1 million to appear first,” Ms. Guerra said.  

The Jaws-themed scratched tickets have already paid off for one Vineyarder. Last year, Vineyard resident Gecimer Silva won $1 million in the lottery game after purchasing the Jaws-themed scratch ticket at Depot Market in Edgartown. 

No matter who walks away with the grand prize this weekend, the contestants will have an experience to remember, according to Ms. Guerra.  

“As part of this, there’s the game show that is the grand prize, but also these contestants are coming to the Island for a weekend trip,” she said said. “It’s going to be filled with a lot of excitement and fun.”
