For the past two years, Island Elderly Housing has been raising funds to put automatic generators in every building at Woodside Village, a local senior residence center. Once again this year, local musicians are stepping up to help the cause as part of the Songwriters for Island Elderly Housing fundraising concert.
“Those generators would be paramount to keeping people in their places safe, so, it’s really an amazing goal to reach,” said Mary Gosselin, service coordinator for Island Elderly Housing.
This year’s concert takes place Friday, June 27 at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. Performers include Lilah Larson, Willy Mason, Kit Orion, Jessie Pinnick, Lexie Roth, Colin Ruel, Caroline Sky, Isaac Taylor, Nina Violet, Elisha Weisner and Jemima James.
Robert Edmunds, Island Elderly Housing Treasurer, said he is excited for the show.
“The musicians are a hoot, They’re wonderful fun, Mr. Edmunds said. “And to have a real nice time together doing a good thing to benefit the elder community...it feels good.”
Since its founding in 1977, Island Elderly Housing has been committed to providing quality and affordable housing for the elderly and disabled on the Vineyard. New generators would ensure the community remains safe and self-sufficient during an emergency.
“The issue of having lack of power can really impact their quality of life,” said Kara Connors, director of Island Elderly Housing. “In other words, somebody can be reliant on electrical devices for not just their phone but maybe oxygen or other items that maybe others take for granted, and that can be especially true for more vulnerable populations.”
State Rep. Thomas Moakley will offer a few welcoming words at the start of the event.
“We’re very fond of Thomas as our legislator, but also he’s taken a real interest in this stuff, and we look forward to seeing what he has to say,” said Mr. Edmunds.
Ms. Connors is thankful for the support.
“If there’s one thing I know about the Vineyard, it’s that people are there for each other, and this will be a really special night for people to come together to support older adults in our community,” she said.
