Edgartown Town Column: Week Ending June 27
If this week’s heat wave is the only one we have I will not be sad. Water was the mainstay of the week — drinking it or dunking your head under the hose and watering the plants.
If this week’s heat wave is the only one we have I will not be sad. Water was the mainstay of the week — drinking it or dunking your head under the hose and watering the plants. The animals were finding shade and the birds were singing when I had the sprinkler on in the backyard. So now we wait and see what the rest of the summer brings us.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Carlos Dias, who celebrated June 21; Christian Fisher, June 22; Allure Wilson, June 23; Dominic Nieblas, June 24; Amera Mello, June 25; and to Kameer Gelin-Rozier and Theodora Tarka, who celebrate their day today June 27.
Of course, the big event this past weekend was the 50th anniversary of Jaws. There were shark T-shirts, glasses, hats — I even heard shark shoes.
I, like many people, watched the movie again. It had been a while since I have watched it and liked it, but I think nostalgia was a big part of the event. It was wonderful to see town as it was in the ‘70s — like Turf and Tackle, where Port Hunter is now, Martha’s Vineyard Bank on the corner of Main and North Water streets, Edgartown Marine, the Islander, which was many peoples favorite ferry, the Naushon, both pulling into Vineyard Haven before the new terminal, even the opening scene when the beach had actual beach grass and it was a long run to the water.
But it was the people who were the most important — Phil Dube, a past selectman; Doctor Nevin, who took care of many of our town folk; John Album, who owned Depot Corner Garage; Jay Mello, son of Dickie and Ann Mello who owned Midway Market; Bill Smith, of Bill Smith Clam Bake; Craig Kingsbury, who was an Island treasure and who talked just like he did in the movie, and never wore shoes but had a huge heart; Alton Tilton, who was a fisherman all his life; Sam Leighton, who ran the Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown for many years, and who also guided the Boys and Girls Club Drum and Bugel Corps in the movie; and Hershel West and his dog.
I could go on and on but it was fun to see the movie and remember it all again.
I am happy to see my street with all five houses lit up for the summer. I was very happy to see Drew and Paula Smith’s house with the lights on, and I saw Drew over the fence who said they will be here most of the summer. Summer has begun.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
