Fred Mollin’s new memoir Unplugged is an inside look at his long career as a record producer and film composer. The story begins when he was 23 years old and produced his biggest hit to date, the song Sometimes When We Touch performed by Dan Hill.
“One of the key lines in the promotion of the book is how do you follow that when you’re 23, and the answer is just to have a life in music,” Mr. Mollin said.
On Sunday, June 29, Mr. Mollin will disuses his book as part of the FILMUSIC festival hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society. The talk begins at 1 p.m. and will be moderated by Caryn Richman.
Mr. Mollin said the book explores his life, from singer-songwriter to record producer to film and television composer.
“It’s been a really interesting journey, so I wanted to put that journey down on paper,” he said.
As a Grammy-nominated and Juno award-winning record producer and arranger, Mr. Mollin has worked with several world-renowned artists. He is also Disney’s most successful instrumental lullaby album artist.
Today, he continues his pursuit of music through his favorite form, record production.
Although his career has taken him all over the globe, he said home is where the heart is, which for him is Martha’s Vineyard.
“I’ve been coming here since I was 15 and I’m 72 now, so this is clearly where my heart is,” he said.
Mr. Mollin attributes much of his creative inspiration and artistic choices to his time on the Island.
“I think that as a creative person, just the sort of sustenance that the Vineyard gives me emotionally, spiritually and physically, has to give ammunition to my creativity,” he said.
Mr. Mollin added that given his deep connection to the Vineyard, doing an event here means a great deal to him.
“Now that the book is out, I really wanted to celebrate it, especially in my quote unquote hometown,” he said.
