Heartfelt Thanks

In January, my wife and I traveled to the Vineyard to visit family and check on the summer home. Late the first evening we were there, we received news of a medical emergency requiring us to return to the mainland as soon as possible.

Early the next morning we drove to Vineyard Haven to see if there was any chance we could get off the Island ahead of schedule. From the moment we walked into the terminal and advised the Steamship Authority of the emergency situation, the entire staff displayed empathy, professionalism and responsiveness to our needs. Availability was immediately checked, booth personnel were notified of our presence and our vehicle was put in a special area for quick boarding. Every person we encountered spoke with respect and showed concern.

Within an hour we were boarded and on our way home thanks to their coordinated efforts.

On this cold winter morning, our hearts were warmed because of them.

Very special thanks to the Steamship Authority.

So grateful to hear this. In 2020 we had a similar situation. The policy then was terrible resulting in a very difficult experience for us. Afterward, we worked with Bob Davis, the Steamship board and local state representatives to effectuate meaningful change to the medical transportation policy to make it much easier for people who are experiencing urgent medical transportation needs. Medical emergencies are traumatic enough without the added stress of transport woes. I’m so glad it worked out for you and may the policy continue to help people anytime they need it. Thank you for sharing!
