Big Sky Tents Cleared for Big New Building

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission gave its unanimous assent this week to Jim Eddy of Big Sky Tents for a new, 27,000-square foot building on a three-acre lot at the airport business park.

“This is the place for big metal buildings,” commissioner Christine Brown said during deliberations Thursday night.

Once the new structure is in place, Big Sky will vacate two other locations it currently leases at the business park, according to Mr. Eddy’s application.

Commissioners conditioned their approval on a final lighting plan for the new facility, which will consolidate Big Sky’s party rental operations.

But they left final landscaping approval to the airport business park, which has its own regulations in place.

The next commissioners’ meeting is scheduled for April 6, but the MVC is also holding a meeting March 22 to discuss the commission’s preservation policy with developers, property owners and other interested parties.

The meeting begins at 4 p.m. at the MVC offices on New York avenue in Oak Bluffs, with remote participation available via Zoom.

The article mentions that, "Commissioners conditioned their approval on a final lighting plan for the new facility, which will consolidate Big Sky’s party rental operations."
Over the past ten years the night sky looking west from Edgartown has slowly become brighter and brighter, obscuring the view of the glory of the stars that used to be such a unique and wonderful thing about the Vineyard... and something that is often not possible now on the mainland.
It is my understanding that the Commission requires outside "security" lighting. Is that still true? The cheapest way to put up an outside light is to just mount a big LED fixture to the outside of the building facing outwards, filling the sky with light that obscures the sky but doesn't illuminate the building it is supposed to protect.
If has not modified its lighting regulations to protect our view of the night sky, could the Commission please share its plans going forward? And could the Gazette please follow up on this matter and detail what conditions and constraints the Commission wants on outside lighting at the Airport Business Park?
Thanks,
Peter J
