Canned Water Replacing Bottles at Boat Line Snack Bars

The Steamship Authority's concessionnaire is switching away from water in plastic bottles, according to an announcement.

Water in plastic bottles will soon be a thing of the past at the snack bar counters aboard Steamship Authority ferries, according to an announcement from the SSA.

The boat line's longtime food and beverage concessionnaire, which recently changed its name from Centerplate to Sodexho Live!, will be phasing in 16-ounce resealable cans of drinking water from the Open Water brand, which produces both still and sparkling water in 100 per cent recyclable aluminum cans, according to the announcement

Why not sell water in cartons like milk everywhere? I have purchased water on the Island in a small carton.

The boats used to have water fountains. If they're trying to make a more environmental choice, Why not offer water bottle refilling stations and paper cups? Canned water? For what, 3 bucks each? They'll still be doling out plastic cups for cocktails, cutlery, straws, soda tops... this is not some groundbreaking environmental improvement being offered.

I agree. Last time I was on the ferry, I had a hard time finding a water fountain - never found it. There should be filtered water fountains (including water bottle refillers) on every ferry. With that said, I'm very glad they're ditching plastic for cans. Metal cans have a robust market for recycling; there is no market demand for used plastic.
