Hospital Reports One New Case Thursday

The Martha’s Vineyard Hospital reported a new positive Covid-19 test on Thursday — the third likely symptomatic patient to test positive on the Island in the past week.

The new patient reported on Thursday is a female in her 20s, according to a daily demographic update provided by the boards of health. She is the 10th patient in their 20s to test positive for the virus, and the 14th under the age of 30, the most of any age demographic.

The Island has now had 45 patients test positive for the virus through a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test since the pandemic began in mid-March. Thirty-three of those positive tests have come from the hospital; 11 have come from TestMV; and another three have occurred off-Island.

Ten Island patients have tested positive for Covid-19 since the Fourth of July; seven at TestMV and four at the hospital.

The hospital is testing symptomatic patients and their close contacts for the virus. TestMV, the comprehensive testing site located at the regional high school, is testing asymptomatic patients.

The total coronavirus caseload on Island is now at 64, including 16 patients who have tested positive for viral antibodies and three patients who have been symptomatically diagnosed with the virus.

In their daily online testing update, the hospital reported that as of 9:30 a.m. it had tested 2,202 patients for the virus, with 33 positives, 2097 negatives and 72 pending.

A daily report from the boards of health said TestMV had tested 4,572 patients for the virus since early May, with 11 positives, 4,379 negatived and 182 pending.

Is it possible for the Hospital & testing site to release a little more information? For example, it would be helpful to know if someone just arrived on MV with the virus last week versus someone who is on a similar circuit as me?

HIPPA definitely restricts what they can release but it really is concerning that it is likely only residents, including the summer people who are here more than a week or two, are likely the majority of "vineyard cases". The short term vacationers are probably not going to get tested here or counted in our cases.

How are we supposed to get an accurate idea of how much Covid is here then? That's what concerns me most.

My understanding is that only those that live here are "counted" toward Vineyard total. Its coded by zip code. The local health department for your zip code gets notified if you test positive. Even if a short term vacation or summer renter gets tested here, they do not go towards the count.
