Compost your food scraps for free this month at any Martha's Vineyard transfer station.
Island Grown Initiative has announced that as part of its MV Food Waste Challenge, food waste drop-off will be free at all six Island transfer stations for the month of June. The service is usually $2 for up to a five-gallon bucket. Buckets are available at all Island waste facilities.
Each year, the Island exports about 6,500 tons of food waste at a cost of about $322,000, according to Island Grown. This does not include residential collection, tipping or sticker fees that residents and visitors pay.

Joanne chilmarksomeone might want to tell the Edgartown transfer station employees. They charged me $2 for a tiny bucket of food waste on June 2.
