The Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation is reminding trail walkers to keep their dogs leashed as an important safety matter during the pandemic.

More people have been using trails at Island conservation properties this spring, the foundation said in a statement.

“Dogs are among our favorite walking companions, and it’s great that there are so many places open to them on Martha’s Vineyard,” said Adam Moore, executive director of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation. “But with the serious health concerns of coronavirus, we hope dog owners will understand that keeping their dog leashed helps make the trails safer for everyone.”

I noticed the Land Bank also had some signs about keeping dogs leashed during pandemic as a safety measure. I cannot imagine what that is protecting against. In 35 years of hiking with one dog or another on Martha’s Vineyard, the only time I have seen people not able to keep distance was when dogs on leashes lunge for each other. I understand that conscious dog owners need to be concerned about the fears of others but what is the reason with Covid-19?
