What follows is an updated list of answers to questions that Islanders may have about the stay-at-home order.
A stay-at-home order remains in effect on the Vineyard. What follows is a list of answers to questions that Islanders may have about what they can do.
Where are masks required?
Face coverings are strongly advised in public, and required to shop at supermarkets.
How can I get a mask?
While surgical masks can be hard to come by, you can make your own simple mask from a T-shirt or use a bandana or scarf to cover your face and nose. Island seamstresses who are making masks for essential workers generally are not taking orders from the public; dressmaker Chrysal Parrot will add you to her waiting list if you email [email protected].
Can I go to the post office?
The U.S. Postal Service, shipping companies and local mail hubs like the Mailroom and UPS Store are all considered essential. Limit mail runs to one or two days a week if you can and remain at least six feet from others at all times.
Can I get gas for my car?
Yes, getting fuel is an essential activity under the order. Be sure to wear gloves and wash your hands carefully after handling the pump handle.
Can I drive to another town or to a public beach?
Yes, the order places no restriction on where Islanders may drive for access to essential services and activities.
What about cabs, rideshares and buses?
VTA, taxis, Lyft and Uber are all listed as essential services. Give careful thought and consider not traveling if you’re not 100% confident you are your usual, healthy self.
Can I take a walk or a hike? Can I ride my bicycle?
As long as you keep a six-foot distance from others, engaging in outdoor activity is permitted and even encouraged, for the sake of mental as well as physical health. This includes walking, hiking, bicycling, surfing and running. Properties owned by the Trustees of Reservations and Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary have reopened. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation and Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank trails remain open. Hikers are asked to maintain at least six feet of physical distance from others.
Where can I walk my dog?
The order does not expressly ban dog walking. The dog park in Tisbury is closed, along with the rest of the town’s parks and recreation facilities, through May 1. Dogs are allowed on land bank properties, but they should be kept leashed at all times to limit the possibility of physical contact. Some other conservation properties expressly prohibit dogs to protect the wildlife. Please abide by posted rules.
Are liquor stores still open?
Liquor stores, grocery stores, pharmacies and farm stands are among the businesses that may remain open. Others include gas stations, laundromats, funeral homes, pet supply stores and automotive repair shops.
Can I go to an ATM to get cash?
Banks are essential services and remain in business during the emergency order.
How can I pay for things other than with cash?
Many Island businesses and services are no longer taking cash, so it’s wise to have a bank card for transactions. Some farm stands and other Island businesses will accept mobile transactions. Apps that you can download to your phone and link to your bank acccount or credit card include Venmo and Apple Pay.
I’m taking care of my friend’s dogs. Can I go to her house to feed them?
Yes, the order allows for home visits to care for pets.
Can I go shellfishing?
As long as you are properly licensed and keep the recommended distance from others, shellfishing and fishing are permitted.
Can I still dispose of refuse and recycling at the transfer station?
Waste management is an essential service. The Edgartown transfer station is encouraging customer payments by card. The Oak Bluffs recycling center is open Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Chilmark facility is open on Wednesdays only and the West Tisbury station is open on Saturdays only. More information is posted on the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse Disposal Resource Recovery District website, mvrefusedistrict.com.
I was planning to do some cosmetic carpentry around my home while I am out of work. I’m not a contractor. Does the construction ban apply?
The ban is intended to prevent movement from place to place, so doing your own carpentry and landscaping at home is permitted as long as you don’t assemble a work crew. Island health officials urge residents to avoid risky chores like chainsawing tree limbs, in order to reduce the demand for services at the hospital.
What about the Chappy Ferry?
The Chappy Ferry is still accepting cash as well as tickets from the kiosk on Dock street. Passengers are asked to distance themselves from the ferry captain by riding on the opposite side of the vessel from the wheelhouse, and to tear their own tickets upon request.
Answers were researched with the assistance of town officials including Edgartown heath agent Matt Poole, West Tisbury town administrator Jennifer Rand, county emergency management spokesman Russell Hartenstine and West Tisbury selectman Cynthia Mitchell. Send additional questions to [email protected] and we will try to find the answers

Nice to see the Governor has
Bob EdgartownNice to see the Governor has said this is overboard by the town's selectman. We need to work and work we will. Let's get this island back to work with caution and common sense.
Glad to see some common sense
Mark EdgartownGlad to see some common sense, we need to be pragmatic but not delusional.
Clearly you are not taking
John Mort EdgartownClearly you are not taking this seriously Bob. I wish you great health but we ALL need to err on the side of patience and doing our part to limit the spread.
Common sense would be to stay
JoeCommon sense would be to stay home. How is getting the job done helping anyone? A few bucks maybe? What happens if because everyone goes back to work the hospital gets flooded with patients. And your elderly parent has to be admitted but there isn’t any respirators left. I guess they just wait outside and die?
How is one person working in
Bob EdgartownHow is one person working in an empty house doing more harm than being home? How is 2 people who are working in an empty house who practice common sense and more dangerous than a family living together. We need safe common sense approach to this. Joe I hope you are not going to check your mail, grocery store, gas station, etc.. because they are all just as bad correct?
Bob, Bob, Bob. No.
Vicki ChilmarkBob, Bob, Bob. No.
The Governor of Massachusetts
ERIC VHThe Governor of Massachusetts is making the wrong call we , eed stay at home order state wide. The islands are unique and should receive a waiver for home rule, the stay in place order and restriction on ferry travel should be our collective decision.
Taking 2 weeks off will save

All construction should stop.
DIANE EDGARTOWNAll construction should stop. Think of the workers who come daily from off island. Stay strong island. Our health workers need us to play by the rules. Governor Baker is living in a dream world. We will get through this and there will be more work than we can handle and life will go on as usual. For now support your fellow construction work by paying them while they are not working if you are so worried about their financial situation.
Do you know ANYONE who is
AnnieP WTisDo you know ANYONE who is sick? I don’t. I knew plenty of people who were sick in December and January - too sick to work, so they STaYeD HOME and recovered. Has it occurred to you that this is not the first flu the world has seen and based on actual reality - not models - everyone who gets sick is not going to die? Or be hospitalized or feel worse than they did in January.
Annie, I do know people who
Hannah VHAnnie, I do know people who are sick. I know people who are sick on the island right now. I know people in Vermont, Florida, NYC and Boston. Yes, most of them will recover, but millions around the world will not. Annie, up to 70% of us will get this virus this year. How many people do you know with diabetes, cancer, asthma, COPD. How many smokers do you know? Because those are the people who will get very sick. Hospitalized and put in the ICU. Do you know how many ventilators the island has?
"Hospital CEO Denise Schepici said the hospital has 25 licensed beds for its day-to-day, but has an extensive “surge expansion plan” in place to allow them more capacity. The hospital also has two full-time respiratory therapists on staff.
Schepici repeatedly declined to comment further on other specifics such as the number of people who could be intubated and the number of ventilators."
What does that tell you? People will get sick. People will be hospitalized. And many will die because the island does not have the supplies, staffing, training or capacity to deal with this pandemic. We all need to do our part to lessen their load. Stay home.
(sigh) One more time: You
Carol formerly Chilmark(sigh) One more time: You are HEAVILY contagious for at least 48 hours before you feel the first symptom. Ergo, not sick but spreading that lethal virus far & wide. Stay home, save lives. Don't be an inadvertent murderer.
We need to focus on what we
Jimbo ChilmarkWe need to focus on what we can control. You can control the spread of this virus if we all work together. If a few people don’t take it seriously And have other ideas they jeopardize the whole population of Martha’s Vineyard. Err on the side of the community needs Before putting your own first
I think Bob's looking for
gutsy chilmarkI think Bob's looking for some common sense in this equation. If you can freely go in and out of Stop and Shop and the liquor stores, banning a few employee on a job site is questionable policy.
I went to the OB transfer
Fred Hancock OBI went to the OB transfer station yesterday. A new sign says it is now only open Monday, Wed, Friday
Sadly, it's gonna take more
Charlie BostonSadly, it's gonna take more cases of infected ppl in your midst to drive home the point ... that nothing is really that safe right now as numbers multiply. 150 workers in Boston hospitals are now infected with COVID.
Up here, people are not blithely going in and out of supermarkets and liquors stores. They're going once a week maybe and buying up what they need. Or just using a delivery service.
On the other hand, people can
Karen West TisburyOn the other hand, people can be asymptomatic for some time, so that the people going in to work could be infecting Bob or others, or he, them, and that is the issue with people working together. At Stop and Shop and liquor stores by mandate, people have to keep 6 feet of distance in between them for this reason. Aside from people getting infected themselves and infecting anyone and/or every one they know, the critical reason to stay home is that the healthcare workers at the hospital will be totally overwhelmed by people who are very ill; there are not enough beds or PPE or ventilators to take care of even the tiniest fraction of people on this island; and everyone at the hospital - not just doctors and nurses, are put at tremendous risk if our entire community does not observe the request to stay in our homes other than for essential services. With over 500,000 people infected worldwide (vastly undercounted in the US because of a total vacuum of kits to test people), this is an illness to take very seriously. Minimizing the devastating nature of it, or shrugging it off and remaining in denial are going to ultimately cause more people to become severely ill on this island, and lead to deaths. Follow the scientists if you want to know what you are doing when you put others at risk.
An ounce of prevention is
Talking Bear TaiwanAn ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure . Stay at home enjoy the time off with your loved ones . Delve into the arts and music create a new garden or greenhouse . Cleans and paint the interior and exterior of your home . Prune your trees landscape your property . Play board games sing and dance. Makecrewyive meals and have fun eating together. Perhaps a barbecue or pic nice daily as the weather is warmer outside if possible. Consider the healthcare workers and the elderly and already inffirm they will be the victims if the virus spreass on the island and the hospital gets inundated. If people stay at home and have 0 contact with others outside their homes the virus will be contained .. Have food and supplies delivered if possible and if you must shop make it one stop and load up in everything you need to last as long as possible . Start sprouting sorouts immediately and a small greens garden can start producing edible greens in short time . If you can get 12!laying hens you will have plenty of eggs for protein . Start your victory war garden ASAP and stay at homeland save others lives
Stay at home !!! Drink warm
Reeve moreau TaiwanStay at home !!! Drink warm fluidsasoctenas pissible . Boost your vitamin.c intake by eating lots of citrus pRticolemonsand limes . Oregano oil in the proper dosage an kill the virus . Wash hands with sop and hot water for at least 30 seconds scrubbing thoroughly all fingers and under nails . Shower upon tetuohome from supply run and change and wash clothes . Avoid any unnecessary contact with anyone while shopping an elbow tap is better than a handshake . Use credit cards not cash as money maybe contaminated. Wear a tight fitting face mask and eye goggles and avoid touching metal doors . Do not touch your eyes nose or mouth with hands . This may all seem way out of hand but consider the exponential rate of the virus as it grows one contamination could end up killing humdreds of elders . This too will pass and a little sacrifice for a few weeks will save lives . Please have supplies delivered to your homes if possible and stay athimeyntim things stabilize. Thank you and Godspeed!!
don't forget, may 1 is taxes
mike edgartowndon't forget, may 1 is taxes due date.......how about the towns forgiving this tax for a while....you are going to get a check from the feds, and turning it over to the town......we need relief
It's not possible to stay six
Sara Piazza EdgartownIt's not possible to stay six feet away from people in Stop and Shop. the number of people allowed in the store needs to be limited and the flow of people in the aisles needs to be all in one direction so we are not passing each other. Even better if we could send our order in and pay for it electronically and pick it up at the curb.
BobB, Long Island
BobB Long Island, NYBobB, Long Island
My daughter and granddaughter live on the island and I am comforted by the fact that you've so far contained the virus to 9 cases. If you keep it that way, then you are in the safest place in the US. However if you get careless and screw up, it will be the worst possible place! T H I N K !!!
The (happily) few cases on MV
Chris McIsaac DCThe (happily) few cases on MV are a sign that the social ban is working, not that it’s now ok to go out. Keep up the good work folks! You are showing the world what a community can do that takes it seriously. I know it’s painful, but you folks rock!
I see that some of the hotels
Mac Middlesex County MAI see that some of the hotels and inns on the island are booking up for June, July,Aug. before a closure to the current pandemic is fully known. The island will be in a peculiar situation of needing visitor dollars while at the same time preventing further outbreaks.Should trippers plan on staying away this year?
The doctors and
Marty Milner TallahasseeThe doctors and epidemiologist are very clear right now about how to control and contain this virus.Listen to them. South Korea is the model that works. One of the reasons it IS a pandemic is because people believed they WERE exercising common sense. In reality we are still waiting for accurate numbers on cases and victims. Without testing fully in place the numbers are not accurate. You just aren't gambling with your own health. Americans travel and people come to the island, just like every other community, every day. Just pretend you moved to Aquinnah and we got six feet of snow in a freak storm. Do that. Stay healthy my friends! I love you all.
