Tisbury Voters Elect Jeff Kristal as Selectman

Tisbury voters elected Jeff Kristal over Seth Gambino as their new selectman and ousted a sitting assessor at the annual town election Tuesday.

Tisbury voters elected Jeff Kristal over Seth Gambino as their new selectman at the annual town election Tuesday.

Mr. Kristal, a finance committee member and former two-term selectman, narrowly beat out Mr. Gambino, a newcomer to politics. The vote was 490-462.

David Dandridge unseated an incumbent town assessor, and Nancy Weaver prevailed in a three-way race for the land bank commission.

Mr. Gambino did have a surprise win when he was elected to the finance committee with seven write-in votes.

In other contests, David Dandridge unseated incumbent assessor Angela Cywinski 538-388. Ms. Cywinksi and other Tisbury assessors were in the public spotlight this year over their decision to tax a number of nonprofits in town, including the Vineyard Playhouse. The decision was recently reversed for the playhouse and some other nonprofits.

In a three-way race for the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank commission, Nancy Weaver prevailed over Nora Nevin and Lynne Fraker. The vote totals were 476 for Ms. Weaver, 171 for Ms. Nevin and 205 for Ms. Fraker.

Lesley Segal was elected to a three-year term on the finance and advisory committee with 734 votes. With three open seats, Ms. Segal was the only candidate on the ballot. Two write-in candidates were elected to fill the other seats: Patricia Hand with 12 votes, and Mr. Gambino with seven.

“It was a last-minute thing,” Mr. Gambino said Wednesday morning. “I’m excited for it.”

After the votes were counted Tuesday night, Mr. Kristal said he was ready to get to work as a selectman again. “I want to thank the Tisbury voters for coming out and putting me back into the board,” he said. “I think we have a lot to look forward to in the town of Tisbury.”

The selectman’s seat was up for grabs after longtime selectman Tristan Israel decided to not run for reelection.

Voting was steady on a cool, cloudy day with the sun breaking out in late afternoon. A total of 975 voters cast ballots, a 28 per cent turnout. There are 3,489 registered voters.

Candidates campaigned throughout the day outside the emergency services facility where polling took place.

Three ballot questions to override the Proposition 2 1/2 tax cap also easily won approval:

• A $650,000 wastewater spending package passed 658-265;

• A $400,000 spending initiative to restart the project to renovate or rebuild the Tisbury School passed 719-224;

• The town’s share of a $1.4 million feasibility study for a new high school was approved 522-423.

Also elected without contest were:

Michael Loberg, board of health, 735; Michael Watts, school committee, 693; Elmer Silva, water commissioner, 780; Cheryl Doble, planning board, 742; Larry Gomez, finance and advisory committee (two-year term), 749. James Norton and Archibald Smith were elected for three-year terms as library trustees. Ian Aitchison was also elected with 13 write-in votes.

Michael Ciancio was re-elected to a three-year term as constable and was top vote-getter with 781 votes.

Let's not get to excited folks- we have a lot to do - for starters lets fix the massive pot hole up at the Park and Ride. And, for the love of God - contact Stop & Shop and have them clean up their facade - its embarrassing - I guess the previous regime found it charming. Stop the patting on the back, roll the sleeves up and get to work!

Steve Tisbury

Geoff, everyone works hard here and our past representation worked tirelessly to make our community a better place to live - the pot hole will be fixed and as far as Stop & Stop is concerned - it is to my knowledge that is a private business and not up to government to meddle in - don't shop there Geoff - We should all stay positive moving forward!

Bruce Edgartown

Geoff, I agree the pothole up at Park n Ride is Inexcusable...
Stop n Shop has tried to submit a plan and the Town turned them down... let’s hope the new Selectman will see this through and have an expansion that we can all agree on...

Henry Vineyard Haven

While asking Stop and Shop to clean up its façade, let's ask them to submit plans for a new store. I think we are tired of having to shop locally in a rundown store with limited selection.

Stop'n'Shop did try to plan a new store, the plans were ready, but Tisbury proved so impossible to deal with they threw in the towel, and are now working on their Edgartown facility. It's likely they'll not be back until there's a completely new group of people running the Town of Tisbury. Once burned, twice shy.

One Super S&S per island

No, Tisbury did not "prove impossible to deal with."
The plan was a terrible plan. Ahold-S&S did not present a plan that would have worked in Tisbury
As they did in Nantucket.
Their plan was a cookie-cutter plan and no efforts to put lipstick on the pig could hide the huge problems.
Basically their plan did not physically fit in the space they wanted to plunk their Mall of America off-Island-type plan.
I am very surprised to see this opinion coming from an Up-islander.
I consider this an ill-informed opinion.

Furthermore, the recent strike and Ahold's treatment of its workforce gives insights into the corporate mentality of this European grocery behemoth.
Islanders and especially those living in "beautiful, rural West Tisbury" should be more thoughtful and more sensitive.Tisbury is not an offshore commercial center to be made ugly for the convenience of residents of WT.
You can easily go over to Edgartown. One superS&S on the Vineyard is enough.
And, I haven't even said anything about the disastrous *aesthetics* of the plan.
It is surprising that an Island artist should be so cavalier.

Tisbury resident Vineyard Haven

Stop and Shop tried to give our community a better place to shop and expand a few years back but Cronigs steamrolled in and bought the adjacent land stopping any hope for a better more affordable place to shop - shame on them for holding us hostage all these years - I can not afford the ridiculous prices at Cronigs - so, when you look at the ugly facade of stop and shop thank your island grocer for making Vineyard Haven such a pretty postcard-like town for all to see!

Laura Tisbury

I agree - I can't even look at Stop & Shop. I only shop an Cronigs - and I just love the way Steve maintains the beautiful gardens and I being a hybrid owner - I can plug in my car. Thank you Steve !

Sorry Vineyard Haven but you got what you wanted and now you are not happy. Instead of working with Stop & Shop you fought them all the way. The owner of the competing grocery store did his best to hurt Stop & Shop and work behind the curtain to stop any expansion. He won the town lost. I hope someday it will get fixed and VH residents will stop having to drive to Edgartown for reasonable priced grocery items.

Congratulations, Seth! All the towns need the younger people to run for office. Please bide your time and run again. Good luck on the finance committee

Good job, Seth!

Hear! Hear!
The new face Seth came within 40 votes---or, actually, 21 votes---of trouncing the old face Kristal.
This seems to be the truly newsworthy aspect of this particular race.
A lot of voters must have reckoned that an unknown quantity might be better than the known quantity.
So I think the takeaway here is a challenge to Jeff Kristal to try something new himself.
I could make some suggestions but I'll leave that to someone else.
Meanwhile, Seth Gambino will gain valuable experience and background while serving on the Finance Committee.
Way to go, Seth!!

Hey, don’t know how comments got derailed from the subject of this article, but congratulations, Jeff, and thank you for stepping up to lead. Congrats to everyone else who won. And for sure, let’s make Town meetings shorter and more efficient, with less individual grandstanding and more collective thinking, eh?
