VTA Drivers Vote to Authorize Strike

Vineyard Transit Authority bus drivers voted on Monday evening to authorize a strike, if they cannot reach agreement on a new contract. The drivers have been locked in bargaining talks with for months.

Vineyard Transit Authority bus drivers voted on Monday evening to authorize a strike, if they cannot reach agreement on a new contract. The drivers, organized under the Amalgamated Transit Union, have been locked in bargaining talks with Transit Connection Inc., the company that contracts with the VTA to hire and manage drivers, for months.

The two sides are on the Island this week, for a fifth bargaining session in the past seven months. A federal mediator joined the talks in February.

Issues on the table include wages and working conditions.

A strike authorization vote does not mean a job action is imminent.

“The members are very frustrated obviously,” said Bruce Hamilton, an international vice president for the union who is participating in the talks. “They did take a vote to authorize the bargaining committee to call a strike if we cannot reach a settlement. There is no time placed on that, but it shows that they’re very frustrated at the lack of progress.”

The union says it is seeking fair discipline and due process, health and safety improvements, and wage increases.

Transit Connection president Ed Pigman said the company continues to negotiate in good faith.

“We’re having meaningful discussions, it will depend on how those work their way through,” Mr. Pigman said. “It’s obviously been some tough going.”

My clients never take the VTA but we need to wrap this up and give them what they want. It is well run and they are friendly - my cleaning lady will always tell me how great the service is and we do not need an issue as summer approaches - my clients are coming - its my season!

VTA drivers are more than bus drivers. They are not like bus drivers in the real world. Most of their passengers are seasonal and back home these commuters rarely use public transportation. Therefore the VTA drivers are part hosts, part tour directors and part vacation planners. They must have a far greater degree of knowledge than a driver off island. They are required to have advanced training and must pass drug and alcohol tests , (which we don't require of teachers or many other public employees) and the starting wage is less than most restaurants pay for dishwashers.

On a personal level I feel like The bus drivers are all so wonderful. They work very hard and are not treated properly. Transit connection is being and has been for a very long time selfish & greedy. I would love to know what more myself and others could do to help the bus drivers get the treatment and working conditions they deserve. I hope this is resolved fairly before all of the good bus drivers quit. (And at this point I honestly wouldn't blame them) On a more practical level I think going into the summer with an entire new fleet of bus drivers, if Transit Connection chooses not to compromise, would be very dangerous. I take the bus regularly and driving those things in the summertime is serious business. It's always a little scary each summer just to have a handful of new drivers each year, I cannot image what would happen if we did not have our kind, patient and experienced drivers to lead us safely through summer.

The VTA is a wonderful system. An annual pass can be purchased for a reasonable amount of money. The other passes are valuable for the seasonal visitors; I have many senior seasonal guests and they prefer the VTA rather than drive in the horrendous traffic, try to park in the villages which is next to impossible...the drivers are always courteous and knowledgeable. We really do need a good public transportation system here. One day, several years ago, I could not get a local taxi in Edgartown to make the early ferry, I walked down to Church Street, boarded the VTA bus and...Voila!!! off to the ferry. A state of the art system, with good routes and connections will help alleviate what has become simply horrid traffic on the island. More should be done to discourage vehicles in the villages but we are not there yet. Too many people will not give up their private cars. In addition, I have everything delivered that is possible;, I walk most places in the village and take the VTA to neighboring villages as I am way too old to circle and circle and waste my time left on earth to find a parking place. Keep up the good work VTA! and thank you.

I need this service. I like to have cocktails in Edgartown and would prefer not to drive. I think most folks would agree. I say pay the workers.

Has anyone tipped a driver lately? The waitress gets 20% of the outrageous amount we pay for a meal, and we expect the VTA business owners to give their profit to the employees. Tithe directly to people, not through a non-profit JUST for the tax break. Have any of you taken the bus, or are you too good for that?

The VTA performs a valuable service and the drivers deserve a fair wage and working conditions. Tipping the drivers is a good idea, but the mechanics seem more complex than tipping waitstaff or counter clerks.

It is incredible that these wonderful VTA drivers have been trying for 16 years to get a union contract, since they first voted for a union in 2003! They deserve a fair contract and our respect. This anti-union Florida company does not reflect Vineyard values.

So far there is one missing comment: "I'd be happy to pay a bit more in fares to be able to pay the employees more." Would you be willing to pay more to see wages go up?

Lorraine Edgartown

Mr. B., yes I would pay more. The fares are reasonable; compared to taxis, private cars, the VTA fares are a bargain. Unless we are all willing to give up this notion of private cars being necessary, we will have crowded streets, polluting vehicles and ill mannered drivers. There are many who talk about saving the earth and the environmental load, but very few are willing to actually do something about it when it involves their own comfort and convenience. Lots of virtue signalling but not much in the way of actual activity.

I notice from an article on the side of the page that the VTA got 1.6 million fed grant. How much is that going to drivers and how much is going to anti union advisers and Mr.Pigman. Is Pigman being paid for fighting the union. My guess is yes. He creates the crisis and then pays himself. Something smells fishy here and it ain't Larsen's. Needs to be investigation of VTA .

I use the VTA and all the drivers I've met are helpful and friendly, can't say the same for some of the jerks who aren't too polite to the drivers. If there is a strike,no one should ride the buses until the owners give the drivers more money and benefits
