Mackenzie Condon and Dash Christy became the first indoor track individual state champions from Martha’s Vineyard at the Division 5 state meet in Boston on Wednesday.

Both the boys and girls track teams earned top 10 finishes, the best in the five-year history of the indoor track program. The boys team finished in a fourth place tie out of 45 teams and the girls finished tied for ninth place out of 43 teams. A total of 14 MVRHS athletes competed across the two teams.

The record-setting performances mean that Condon (long jump) and Christy (55-meter hurdles) will compete in the All-States regional meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Feb. 23. They will be joined by JoJo Bonneau, who finished third in the 55-meter hurdles.

Condon’s winning leap in the long jump event was a personal and school record at 17 feet, 4.5 inches. The MVRHS senior also qualified for All-States in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in second with a time of 8:58.

Christy’s winning time of 7.96 in the 55-meter hurdles shattered the school record he set just weeks ago. He also finished 13th overall in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 1.5 inches.

Record-setting performances were spread out across the events and a few athletes put out strong enough showings to give each a wild card chance of qualifying for the All-States meet. Senior Nate Packer surpassed his own school record in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, three inches to finish in sixth place. Peter Burke also set a new school record in the mile, placing fourth with a time of 4:32.39.

The boys 4x800 meter relay team made up of Burke, Isaac Richards, freshman Jonathan Norton and Owen Atkins also finished in the top five with a time of 8:34.91, beating their own school record set this season.

Additional results include: 55-meter hurdles: JP Alves (8.8 - 17th); Mile Amber Cuthburt (5:37 - 10th); Catherine Cherry (5:40 - 13th). 300-Meter Dash: Anabelle Biggs (44.89 - 21st). 600-Meter Run: Daniel Bonneau (1:34 - 20th). Two-Mile: Catherine Cherry (12:25 - 13th).
