Vineyard Haven Town Column: April 6

It seems hard to look forward to spring but perhaps by Tuesday, April 17 we shall.

It seems hard to look forward to spring but perhaps by Tuesday, April 17 we shall. Renee Clermont will be the guest speaker at the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club at 1 p.m. at the Wakeman Center off Lamberts Cove Road. We are always looking for new members. Renee will explore the Not-So Secret Secrets of Window Boxes and Pots, a topic that should give us all hope. I’ll see you there.

We are invited to celebrate the Wampanoag New Year at Aquinnah town hall on Sunday, April 8 at 5 p.m. Happy New Year to all.

Our Boy Scouts of Martha’s Vineyard have a car wash fundraiser from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. A mere $10 per car. It will be held at Edgartown Hardware. If you or your child want to volunteer please call Adam Moore at 508-280-7883. There is always a special place in my heart for Scouts.

Meanwhile, Marcia Rossi Wise, that fabulous friend, musician and artist who lived here for so long has made the Boston Voyager Magazine. Marcia’s new studio is at 450 Harrison Street, Studio 403, in Boston. The interview covers a wide swath of my friend’s life and artwork, but with Marcia that is never enough. Visit marciawise.com and get acquainted with her work.

Speaking of great artists, our own Washington Ledesma has a sale at his open gallery on Friday, April 6 from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the studio is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This amazing artist has a spring clearance sale on his tiles, bowls, plates, cups, fish and jewelry. Visit at 5 Murrant avenue in Sea Glen, Oak Bluffs.

Nothing more fitting in April, which is National Poetry Month, than to have our Poetry Cafe at the Vineyard Play

house at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 5. Unfortunately, it is the last one of the season, we shall meet again on the first Thursday of the month when the summer gang clears out. Arnie Reisman is your host; he is serving excellent pies and beverages. Some of our many talented Island poets will perform. Look for Lara Roosevelt among the presenters. I’ll see you there.

Betty Burton believes St. Anthony went out of his way to come through for her family. Since I posted we were looking for one of the arms to son Jakob’s wheelchair which fell off the car roof while John was driving — don’t ask, I have done that with cell phones, coffee, and salads — someone found the arm and placed it carefully over the fence. The Burton-Sundman family cannot stop speaking about how wonderful the party for Jakob was and how thankful for the support. Stay tuned, Jakob is working hard on his rehabilitation.

One of my favorite former students came home for the weekend. Noel Macy and I had a great time at lunch last Tuesday. I love to hear his stories of the many events he attends in Boston. Noel lives in Southie; plenty to do there.

Our condolences go out to Elaine Bart and her family on the death of Roger on Friday, March 30. This wonderful couple have celebrated their 69th anniversary. Elaine says they dated for four years before the wedding. Now here’s a couple who fell in love and stayed there! Our best to the Barts. We shall never forget him. Condolences also to the family of Bob Francis. His service will be at the Oak Bluffs Catholic cemetery at 11 a.m on Sunday, April 15. A gathering will follow at the P.A. Club. Mat Hubert died last week. I am unsure about his services. I have heard some gatherings in his honor are planned for the P.A. Club and the V.F.W. this weekend. If any of Matt’s friends can let me know, please do. Matt was always so kind to me. May he rest in peace. The birthday bandwagon needs to be turned into the birthday bus. Here are some celebrants and forgive me and enlighten me on the folks I have missed. Delilah Baker turned 16 in Texas last week. Dad Joshua says the party lasted all week. Doris Day and Ellen O’Brian shared March 31. Hollis Kelly and Enoia Dos Reis claimed April 1; Bo Andrews and Tom Spiconardi aged gracefully on April 2; Delores Borza’s exact date escapes me but her name never will, wish her the best; Anita Cimeno celebrated with her family on April 3; Amber Willoughby was feted on April 4; April Cimeno observes her day on April 9; Barbara Kunzelman is honored on April 12; and on April 14 Rita McKenna Kean takes the cake. Many happy returns.
