Island Grown Initiative will begin a produce delivery program at Woodside Village in Oak Bluffs this winter that aims to bring fresh, healthy food to residents at a low cost.

The delivery program will provide SNAP beneficiaries with biweekly packages of Island-grown vegetables. Customers can choose from three packages with a combination of produce which may include butternut squash, acorn squash, carrots, potatoes, mixed greens, pea shoots, microgreens, bell peppers, cucumbers and braising greens. The squash, potatoes and carrots are grown at Morning Glory Farm, with the rest of the produce being grown at the IGI Farm Hub.

Package costs will range from $12 to $18. The program caters to elderly individuals who cook for themselves and is part of the federally-funded Healthy Incentives Program which rewards SNAP users for buying fresh local produce by giving them more dollars to spend on food.

The winter produce program follows the successful pilot for a mobile market that ran all summer.

IGI plans to build expand on the pilots in the future.
