A fire which apparently began in a malfunctioning ceiling fan at the Madison Inn brought a quick response from the Oak Bluffs fire department Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters were able to put out the flames just as the fire burned through the ceiling and began to spread to the exterior, according to Oak Bluffs fire chief John Rose.
The first units on the scene were able to knock down the fire with foam fire extinguishers.
Madison Inn owner Caleb Caldwell said the inn is closed for the winter, and there was no one in the building at the time of the fire. He said his wife Mary Ibsen drove by the building at 18 Kennebec avenue by coincidence at about 2 p.m.
“Mary just happened to stop by the building, found it full of smoke,” said Mr. Caldwell. “One of our employees lives in the manager’s apartment during the winter, but he wasn’t here. Very fortunate. We’re closed for the winter so we’ve got all winter to figure it out.”
Chief Rose said this was the kind of a fire where minutes counted in response to the call.
“A fan in a bathroom caught fire, extended into the building, came up the outside of the building a little bit, and extended into a second floor bedroom a little,” Chief Rose said.
“A few minutes longer and it would have been a whole different fire. You’ve got the wind coming right off the water, and that whole back area where the fire was is exposed.”
Firefighters checked the interior and used large fans to clear smoke.
No one was hurt.

We'd like to thank every
Caleb Caldwell Madison InnWe'd like to thank every single member of the Oak Bluffs fire fire fighting community that came to our building today and saved it from burning down. Heros every one. Scott Hershovitz was closest by and first on the scene and he was instrumental in applying initial fire suppression with our in-house fire extinguishers. He was very cool in a very tense situation. All the best to everyone there.
So proud of our son...he has
Bonnie and Dave HershowitzSo proud of our son...he has always been the epitome for all human beings.
ahhh thank caleb! it easier
scott hershowitz oak bluffsahhh thank caleb! it easier for most first responders and rescuers to keep cool when it's not our home, our business, our loved ones, it's a bit easier to keep emotions at bay and just focus on our job to just help those in need. but you and mary kept pretty calm too! you're both smart and you had the power off to the room with the faulty electrical ceiling fan, very good idea! and i happened to be just a few feet closer to the fire than you when you handed me the extinguisher, so i did that part. and let us not forget, most importantly, that if it wasn't for mary's intuition to just stop by this all would have been so horribly different! it's corny to say, but when something really scary happens we all just drop everything and rush to help. we'll all just try to look out for one another on our wee special island. we only have each other to fall back on here. and those crazy firefighting folks are the real heroes indeed, i only went in because it wasn't very smokey yet, i'm no firefighter! but those folks go in when there's flames shooting out the roof and someone's trapped inside!! in emergencies we all put everything aside, emotions, squabbles, dinners, precious sleep in the middle of the night, and rush to help. it feels good to help.
