Five new floating wheelchairs are available on Vineyard beaches this summer after a donation from Smile Mass.

The donated wheelchairs were presented in a ceremony Wednesday at Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs. Three wheelchairs will be available at Edgartown public beaches. The organization also donated one wheelchair to Oak Bluffs and one to Vineyard Haven for use at public beaches in those towns.

The floating wheelchairs can go from the parking lot over the sand and right into the water, where they float.

Smile Mass had donated more than 120 floating wheelchairs for public beaches in Massachusetts. They also have 10 chairs available through a loaner program. For more information visit smilemass.org.

Thanks to a Hallmark movie and your information about your Wheelchair accessible area, Martha’s Vineyard is now on our Bucket List. My husband Gene is a T 12 paraplegic. Finding an accessible vacation spot is a must! Your floating wheelchair look like fun! Thanks for being a wheelchair friendly vacation spot! Hope to see you soon.
