I have read and re-read Thomas Dresser’s excellent African Americans of Martha’s Vineyard. How awful it is to read such vile accounts of discrimination that black people have faced — and I wonder how I, a white person, would have acted.Were there actual “white” and “colored” signs posted in the Vineyard? Where?
