Vineyard Haven Town Column: July 8
The feedback on the fireworks was fantastic. Islanders and visitors alike gathered on Monday night after the parade in Edgartown to watch the biggest and best display of pyrotechnics yet.
The feedback on the fireworks was fantastic. Islanders and visitors alike gathered on Monday night after the parade in Edgartown to watch the biggest and best display of pyrotechnics yet. I have been treated to the videos via Sid Counsell on Facebook, and I very much appreciate that, Sid. Thanks for thinking of me. I actually can not attend fireworks anymore because I must babysit for my dogs on what they consider to be the worst night of the year.
You know I got hooked on Facebook when I was sick and couldn’t get out much. One of the funniest pages to show up is Bad Parking on MV in which, you, our citizen reporters, take pictures of the outrageous parking positions many of our inhabitants, particularly visitors, seem to favor. It is one of the funniest threads I have ever followed. Keep up the investigative photography.
The Shaw Cramer Gallery is no longer on Main street, but Nancy Shaw Cramer has invited you to 38 Looks Way, West Tisbury, off Music street, tomorrow, Saturday, July 9, for a one of a kind showing of fascinating textiles and jewelry. Come relax by the pond. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The talented, inventive Mad Potter, aka Bill O’Callaghan, uses inspiration from his childhood in Ireland and his bucolic lifestyle here on Island to make some of the most beautiful and whimsical pottery. You are invited to view his work at Art in the Stacks at our library during regular business hours this month.
Carole Early wants you to know that even though the weather is nicer we are still concerned about our homeless population and especially in winter. Two fundraisers this weekend will help secure our Hospitality Homes program to provide warm beds and housing for those who need it. Charles Whitehead performs at both programs. On Saturday, July 9, at the Old Whaling Church you will be treated to a classical piano concert which begins at 8 p.m. There is a silent auction which starts at the Church at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. This program is sponsored by the all-Island clergy group.Call 210-391-8299 to reserve your ticket. That is the same contact number for the evening of jazz concert, also headlined by Charles Whitehead, on Sunday, July 10, in the evening at 1 Sengekontacket Road. The suggested donatio for the jazz evening is $25. I know you will all have a wonderful time.
Just as the Arizona contingent of the Howes family packed up and returned after a delightful week, the New Jersey contingent arrived. Javier, Julia, Aidan and Olivia Gomez Blanco drove from East Brunswick to Marge and Paul’s on Sunday night with their canine companion, Lollipop aka Lolly in tow. Javier spent a few days but had to return to his work. Julia and the grandkids will be visiting friends, getting in lots of beach time, and enjoying the island summer in the way they have done best over the last few years. I am certainly missing my gang on Lenny’s Loop.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Jordan Stallings Friday; July 9 is a party for Nancy Hoffmann, Richard Clark, Nathan Herrick and Bruce Bailey; July 10 is shared by Russell Burrows, Ketlyn Carolyn Alves and Orla O’Connor; July 11 shines on Denny Freitas, Dennis White and Alden Besse; July 12 is for Veraniece Martins; July 13 belongs to Nancy McPartlin Gardella, Jaron Schilling, Thomasina Petrone, Karen Lobdell and Talula Goldberry Martin; and on July 14 Alanna Majors and Bob Wheeler take the cake. Many happy returns.S
