Snowfall Leads to Early School Closures, Ferry Cancellations

Vineyard schools and town buildings were closing early Friday as a night of heavy rainfall turned to snow late in the morning.

Vineyard schools and town buildings were closing early Friday as a night of heavy rainfall turned to snow late in the morning.

A winter storm has moved over most of Massachusetts, though forecasts said the Vineyard would be spared the worst and likely see one to three inches of snow accumulation.

Just under two inches of rain fell overnight Thursday.

As the rain turned to wet, heavy snow, Martha's Vineyard schools announced early dismissals, and several towns announced that town buildings would be closing early.

The Steamship Authority cancelled several afternoon ferry trips because of the weather. Ferries were running on a case-by-case basis, with up to date information on steamshipauthority.com.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.
