The deer hunting season is underway this week on the Vineyard. The archery season began Oct. 19 and runs through Nov. 28.
Next up will be shotgun season, which starts Nov. 30 and goes through Dec. 12. Primitive firearms season runs from Dec. 14 to Dec. 31.
Hunting hours begin half an hour before sunrise and end half an hour after sunset. Hunting is prohibited on Sundays, and hunters are required to have licenses and wear hunter orange.
According to state data, 594 deer were harvested in Dukes County during last year’s hunting season. More than half, 337, were harvested by shotgun, 207 were harvested during archery season, and 59 were taken with primitive weapons.
