Located roughly in the middle of the Island’s south shore, this large Great Pond is ringed by freshwater-fed coves and inlets, similar to the Edgartown Great Pond. A wide barrier beach runs between the pond and the Atlantic Ocean, and like in Edgartown, manmade breaching managed by shellfish biologists takes place several times a year.

Water quality in the pond is good to excellent; wild oysters, blue claw crabs and softshell clams can be found there. Chilmark, West Tisbury and The Nature Conservancy are sponsoring a project to build an oyster reef to help filter nitrogen out of the water. Rich with migratory waterfowl, the pond is a favorite haunt for duck hunters in fall and winter.
