Frederick Douglass is returning to Martha’s Vineyard to tell once again The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro. This speech was first given on July 5, 1852 at the Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society of Rochester, N.Y. For many summers now the Vineyard has brought these important words back to life.

On Friday, July 3, the speech will be given at noon at the Federated Church in Edgartown. There will be 13 readers taking part in the event, including Cathlin Baker, Joe Carter, Herbert Foster, George Davis, Steve Ewing, Herb Ward and others.
